Side-chaining compressors are amazingly useful effects. They are standard issue tools for vocal ducking in radio production, to fade out music when a narrator is speaking. They are also insanely popular in dance production, able to make your whole mix "pump" or "breathe" by following a kick drum.

Unfortunately, side-chaining in software can be tricky. Some audio programs simply do not support it, others require pretty complex routing techniques.

This is made possible because the interface has separate control of the Neumann™ U-47 Tube Microphone signal and the Direct Pickup signal, which was sampled through a vintage Neve™ 1083 Console. This stunning sounding acoustic is chromatically sampled, with multi-dynamic velocity switching. The hardest velocity in every Bass patch in Trilogy brings in real bass glisses, similar in concept to the idea Spectrasonics pioneered on the Hans Zimmer Guitar libraries. An acoustic Martin™ Dreadnought Bass Guitar is also available in the Acoustic section -perfect for those "unplugged" sessions!

Trilogy's innovative True Staccato™ technique lets you play repeated notes on the Acoustic and Electric basses in real-time with a whole new level of realistic phrasing, and finally allows for repeated notes that sound completely natural like a bass player, and not like the dreaded "machine gun" sampler effect!

ELECTRIC BASS
The huge selection of Electric Basses are from all new, painstakingly recorded sessions, and features classic 4, 5 and 6 string models, performed in Fingered, Picked, Muted, Rock & Roll, Slapping, Ballad, Fretless and R&B techniques through rare, custom-made tube preamps. Special variations are presented including Harmonics, Glisses, Fuzz, Trills, FX and thousands of Slides! All the patches are mapped the same way, so that one sequence will work with any bass you select.

There are thousands of samples used in these instruments, mapped with multiple dynamics for amazing expression. You don't have to "assemble" Bass parts with Trilogy, it's extremely playable as a highly expressive real-time instrument too!

To complete the picture, every Acoustic and Electric Bass in Trilogy has a special "Finger Noise" release layer with release triggering, that gives these basses amazing realism -perfectly simulating the fretboard response of the real bass. When a note is released, the Finger Noise layer triggers an appropriate noise sample from among hundreds of tiny fret noises, subtle string scrapes, squeeks, x-notes, taps and mutes, which add a user controllable "human" imperfection element to your performance. The impOSCar is modelled on the unique and wonderfully esoteric British synthesiser, the OSCar.
OSCar was manufactured between 1983 and 1986 and was used to great effect by artists such as Ultravox, Jean-Michel Jarre, Stevie Wonder, Underworld, Orbital and even Oscar Peterson. Because it was released at the same time as MIDI and early affordable polyphonic synthesisers affordable the instrument wasn't a huge commercial success and only 2000 were produced before the company ceased trading.

However, to those in the know, OSCar has been a highly prized item and the secret weapon in many programmer's sonic arsenal. In a sea of monophonic subtractive synths available at that time it was unique and refreshing in many ways: It looked interesting, it had an additive synthesis section, it had memories, it was duophonic and monophonic and, with the exception of the filter, it was all digital. All of these features contributed to its sound which could be summed up in one word- Awesome. From sublime to screaming, from clean and clinical to phat as phuck, the OSCar did it all.

The impOSCar was two years in production and since its release it'amount of s become one of the most respected virtual synthesisers on the market. All the notable features of the original instrument are evident here as well as several enhancements including a more intuitive additive section, polyphony, increased LFO waveforms and a chorus and delay effects section.

The filters are a particular highlight of the impOSCar and feature two stunning 12dB filters running in series, a filter overdrive and sublime separation control. With these and the huge waveforms on offer the impOSCar is capable of a range of sounds far beyond that of any standard subtractive synthesiser.

Classic House and Garage loops from the masters - 'deep house v2.0' offers around 1000 of the newest, freshest breaks, loops and samples for your music.

Features: 760 different two-bar loops, each set into tempo groups of 120, 125, 130, 135 and 140bpm. True to house music tastes, most waver around the 130bpm mark, and within nearly all of the loops you get a lot of rhythmic and textural diversity.
DH v2.0 also provides a good cross-section of house music sub-genres including Speed Garage, Disco House and Authentic House. There are even a few hints at drum & bass styles, as well as hardcore, and pure techno influences.
You will find that the producer has a keen set of ears for picking the right kind of kick drums and snares, and fills up the bits in between with just the right amount of percussion to keep things shunting along without ever sounding cluttered. Effects-wise, DH v2.0 has made most of the decisions for you, adding all the right amounts of reverb and compression and thus making for easy sampling and instant beat gratification.
At the tail end of the disk is the single-hits section, which offers many of the individual drum and percussion sounds used in the preceding tracks and includes a large number of interesting and highly usable acoustic drum kit samples.
Every loop has been finely tuned and edited to exact BPM's, making it even easier to use samples in your tunes. Tough and bumpy, smooth and slamming and mixed on a vintage Neve console, these loops are of the very highest quality.

This library was produced by J. R. Beaumier (aka J. R. Exley), an extremely experienced composer and producer who has been working in the dance music area since the early 80s. From advertising and television music (Sony, Dunlopillo, Renault...) to pop records (Etienne Daho, Jean Louis Murat, Indochine), since the 90s J.R. has been busy remixing top artists (Silencers, Gypsy Kings, Peter Kingsbury, Indochine, Lambarena, Cerrone and many more) and produced the first French House Compilation in 1991 for Virgin Records. He also co-wrote ‘Human Nature’ with Cerrone which made an appearance high in the Billboard Dance Chart with mixes by David Morales and Frankie Knuckles. He has also worked with James Reynolds (M People, Shamen, Beatmaster, Sasha...) who mixed the loops for this sample library.

Xfer Records is a label started by Deadmau5 and his longtime friend and studio accomplice Steve Duda for their collaborations, such as BSOD, and WTF? with Tommy Lee and DJ Aero.
Their latest CD offering is not a music CD, but rather a sample CD-ROM for music producers, featuring a plethora of WAV loops and one-shots, ready to be loaded in to any popular music-making software.

BT - Breakz From The Nu Skool

BT has risen to the pinnacle of the electronica pack, and one of the reasons is his lethal rhythm programming. His machine-gun stutter edits and jackhammer grooves are the stuff of legend, and now you can get a piece of the action on his signature library CD, Breakz from the Nu Skool. (The companion Twisted Textures CD is reviewed below.) In our Nov. '01 interview with BT, he talked about the library, and emphasized that every loop on the disc is "sample-accurate. No more flamming as you stack loop upon loop."

The loops on Breakz from the Nu Skool are divided into two main categories: Dirt Breaks (mostly electronic with extreme editing and processing) and Live Breakz (aggressive acoustic loops, many of which are compressed, distressed, and creatively processed). Strap on a seatbelt for loops such as "Rumbler," one of many in-your-face live offerings. The styles on Breakz range from trance and big beat to drum & bass and beyond. Lengths range from two to four bars long, tempos from 60 to a soaring 180.

In reviewing Breakz, I put it to good use on a remix project for an electro/metal band. The problem with using this collection was deciding what not to include. Signature "BTisms" abound, such as on the digital slicefest "NSync Freaked" or the ultra-funky, percolating "Fingers in Ya Ears." In my case, I ended up using three lethal grooves, and, just as BT would, imported the files into an audio editor and chopped them up even more.

The "cons" of this collection are few. The vast majority of loops are winners, but there are a few throwaways in the lot, such as "Ilumm Top," a tired "boom-tsh-boom-tsh" 909 pattern, and the clammy fill at the end of "Hedge Hopper." "I agree that there seems to be some dead wood here," says Associate Editor Ken Hughes. "But even the weakest of loops are still quite usable."

BT has established himself as one of the greats of electronic music. Now that he's opened his vault of loops and let us in, we should all get in line. "This is a killer sample set," concludes Ken. A no-brainer purchase indeed.

Sylenth1 is a softsynth so basic and conventional in architecture and routing that you'd never suspect, on first glance, how utterly superior it is. It is the best sounding subtractive emulation I've heard bar none, even better to my ears than the Minimonsta, of which I am very fond. Sylenth1 has a rubbery thickness to its basic sound that is shockingly analog-like, and it really holds up in a mix with real instruments far better than most softsynths. It is, in every other regard, a modest and limited sofsynth. There are many features I wish it had that it lacks in its present form, but all of those qualms and complaints are destroyed--daily--by the essential sound quality of Sylenth1.

Sound Quality
All the sounds were recorded and processed at 24 Bit resolution and 44.1KHz sample rate.

Organisation
The Instruments list (which can be viewed by clicking on "MORPHOLOGY Patch List (PDF)" at above left) groups the sounds into categories. These are further subdivided into folders which then contain a selection of sonically related instruments.

Memory Size
The size in Mb is given for each instrument in the Patch List. All programming has been carried out with the samples loaded into RAM. However, a visit to the Native Instruments website will enable registered users to download an update to the KOMPAKT software interface which would allow you to activate a Direct from Disk (DFD) functionality if you prefer, thereby enabling the streaming of the samples direct from your hard disk drive.

Modulation Wheel Assignments
Every single instrument (except the basic waveform templates) has the Modulation Wheel assigned to a function. This gives a lot of dynamic control over the character of the sound. These assignments are listed for your convenience in the Patch List.

Polyphony
All instruments are programmed at the default polyphony of 32 notes except for a selection of sounds in the Synths sub-folder. These sounds are marked as Monophonic in the instrument list (see below).

Groups
Several of the Noise FX instruments use templates that have two groups assigned (White + White / Pink + Pink or White + Pink Noise). These of course therefore use 2 notes for every single note played. Their table of contents also lists the Mod Wheel assignment of each of the groups.

Multis
Up to 8 instruments can be combined in a Multi giving a vast array of possible combinations of the supplied single instruments. For example try combining a couple of bass instruments for some really fat and thunderous sounds. Or how about combining a Sawtooth and Square wave pad and then using the modwheel to crossfade between them. This latter effect is easy to set up by over-riding the pre-programmed Mod Wheel assignments. Simply set the Mod Wheel to control one instrument with positive volume control and the other with negative volume control.

CPU Load
The exact CPU load of any given instrument depends on a myriad of factors - the power of your computer, notes played, complexity of the instrument etc. However if you find the CPU load is too high for any particular instrument the quickest way of reducing this is to see if the instrument uses any of KOMPAKT?s own built in FX. If so these can be turned off to maximise CPU efficiency.

Tuning
Where possible the samples have been tuned to C3 as the root key. However bear in mind that many of the more esoteric sounds either use heavily detuned or pitch scrunched effects so exact tuning is tricky to say the least. Also several sounds use exotic micro-tonal scales so again they can be difficult to sit into a normal harmonic structure. Many of the loops provided by Markus Reuter were originally played in keys other than C. In these cases the Patch List (click on the link above left for the PDF) lists their Root Keys where you will find the original sample playing back as it was originally recorded. Finally many of the instruments have as part of their name useful clues to what key, mode or notes are involved in their construction.

Virtual Synth
With the user interface that the KOMPAKT INSTRUMENT format provides, it was a good opportunity to provide a meticuolusly prepared set of basic analogue synth multi-samples. These raw VCO samples can be used as the sound source for some serious synth programming.

With this aim in mind samples were prepared @ 24Bit/44.1KHz across the whole keyboard range and provide an accurate representation of all 6 waveforms of probably the most famous analogue synth of all time. Each sample is 11 seconds long with a loop length of about 9 - 10 seconds per sample. This is sufficiently long to allow a certain 'natural' feel to the sounds with slight pitch drifting or phase changes occurring over this time.

The full multi-samples were prepared at every minor third starting at Gb-1 and going all the way up to C8. Thus each of the pitches, namely C, Eb, Gb and A need only be transposed up and down by one semi-tone to provide the remaining notes. This means that one of the waveform templates includes 35 seperate samples and requires 48.6 Mb of memory. Lite versions are also provided where the Eb and A samples were omitted as well as the very low and high frequencies. This provides a more memory concious 15.3 Mb template.

The 6 waveforms are Triangle, Triangular Sawtooth, Sawtooth, Square, Wide Rectangular and Narrow Rectangular. Of course each of these has different harmonic contents and so sound quite different. Also when viewed close up in a sample editor it becomes clear that these are certainly not theoretically perfect waveforms but include all sorts of rough edges which is probably what gives an analogue synth that mystical warm fuzzy sound we all love so much.

As one of the purposes of this excercise was to duplicate this warmness it wasn?t felt necessary to exactly tune all the samples. So the procedure in preparing the samples was to manually tune each one to a reference source by ear. This means that when playing the finished result a certain amount of beating between different samples will occur which is a good thing! Furthermore some of the ear splitting high notes are almost impossible to tune exactly. What you get though is a beautiful, full, warm analogue VCO template which you can then use as the starting point for synth programming using the KOMPAKT INSTRUMENT interface.

The Virtual Synth folder holds the raw templates in both Full and Lite versions as well as some White/Pink Noise templates. Use any of these as a basic starting point or explore the many variations that are provided. You'll find a few of the latter in the Noise FX subfolder derived from the White/Pink Noise templates. About 70% of the instruments in the Synth Pads subfolder and 100% in the Synths subfolder are derived from the full and Lite waveform templates.

These new features are the result of countless hours of hard coding, design and engineering,
bringing the best work of discoDSP team in the form of a new VST instrument.

2 new oscillators that result in a even broader sonic palette. The new parabolic waveform will be bliss for beautiful pads,
soft sounds and new FM tones. Pink noise brings that warm and lovely sound from classic synthesizers.

Now you can easily add new waveforms and wavetables in DWB banks, WAV or SoundFont 2.04 (SF2) formats,
the later supporting 24 bit waveforms. Since it's not virtual analog synthesis we took extreme care of it by
adding one of the best interpolation algorythms, resulting in very little aliasing and extraordinary resampling quality.

Broomstick Bass VSTi + BroomstickBass Library

The meat of what Broomstick Bass is all about pares down to two main areas. One being the virtual bassist styles, and the other being the bass instruments. What I did first was to pick a style that I wanted to work with. Since I had a bluesy guitar riff that I wanted to use I picked Minor Blues from the blues styles.

After working out the tempo I turned on Auto Mode. Now that I had the first bass line variation and the drum metronome doing their thing I thought I was ready to lay down the guitar riff, but something just wasn't working. Having the single variation playing the whole time didn't help me feel what I was playing. So I switched to Manual Mode and only the drums where playing, so I thought I was set. Well, as soon as I cut the first take and stopped everything, I went to turn the drums on by clicking the drum button and poof, nothing! After some checking, I came to learn that the drum metronome apparently isn't intended for use in manual mode. So why was it working before? Well the trick to getting the drum metronome working in manual mode is to turn on Auto Mode, key a note to start the virtual bassist and drum metronome, and then switch to Manual Mode. Viola, now you can have the Drum Metronome playing an appropriate style while you lay down all your instruments.

Now that I had a drum rhythm to feed off of I was able to lay down my guitar riffs in my ideal tracking environment. With drums to hold it all up and guitar riffs to do some talking, I was ready to fill it out with the help of a virtual bassist. So back into Auto Mode I go to get dirty with Broomstick Bass.

Now virtual keyboards are great for doing a quick note check while not by a keyboard, but when it comes to playing, forget about it. So I turned to my MIDI keyboard. OK, the first thing I came to notice is that in Auto Mode, you are restricted to a "useful range", which is usually just over two octaves. So whether you key C1 or C3 you'll hear just one pitch. If a user tries to play a note that's out of the useful range, the plugin transposes the input up or down (by octaves), to put all the notes used by the specific style back into the useful range. Most styles are available in two octaves. For example, the style "Essentials" under "Funk" plays all the way from B-0 to A-2 - just two half-notes short of three octaves - without transposing.

When in Manual Mode you'll have 4 octaves to abuse as you wish, and that makes sense since it is functioning as a Virtual Instrument in this mode. Before I start playing, and given that I only have one octave to play with, I'm going to octave shift my keyboard to get the Control Octave in a comfortable position for my right hand and then I can play the bass line with my left. Now if you prefer to use your right hand to play the bass line, you can go to the Edit page and change which octave the Control Octave start on. The default is C5, so just select C1 and you'll have your Control Octave on the other hand. Pretty cool huh.

When I get a new program I always like to twist some knobs, move some sliders, and see what, if anything the program responds to with my keyboard in General Midi 2 mode. Well Volume and Release knobs corresponded to the same slider on my keyboard, Release Noise was under my decay slider, and I found Glide under my Portamento Time slider. So I had the basic Main page controls working without any additional set up or memory sets, something I like. Time to lay down some bass.

This part is all experimentation and with all the playing variations you'll just need to see what works. For the most part the simplest variation starts at 1 and increases in complexity and pace through 8.

Here is a little tip. Holding down the A key on the Control Octave will pause the drums and Auto Mode, and allow you to play in Manual Mode. But holding down the A key isn't ideal most of the time since it kills the drums. A nice little feature that helps us out with this problem is a threshold on the modulation wheel. Press the Mod wheel all the way up and it will cut just Auto Mode, leaving the drums to re-enforce the groove.

Beyond Auto Mode is where Broomstick Bass really shines for those of us who like to write our own riffs. That Control Octave gives so much extra touch it's a wonderbar! For example, one thing I really enjoy doing when playing a guitar is accenting the backbeat with a string slap and with the Smack note (F key) I can pull this off to really great effect. Another great helper is Legato (E key) that blends nicely between the pre-note and current note giving a nice sliding transition. Basically all of the Control Octave is very useful and helps propels Broomstick Bass into a category all its own.

How is the song progressing you ask? Smashing! I've got my backing of drum metronome, my guitar riff, my arrangement of Auto Mode bass riffs, and I just added a little ditty in Manual Mode to round it out. Now the only thing left is to play with the built in DSP on the Edit page to hone the tone to my liking. There is an equalizer that is set up to get the most out of a bass and also to help pick out, well the sound of a pick. Likewise the compressor has been tweaked for bass dynamics, which is why it is a single knob, and though all the instruments are very even you may need this in certain situations, so it's nice to have. Finally the pitch shifter will help give an otherworldly sound and I'm all for anything that helps expand creativity, but for this bluesy song it didn't seem to work but I thought it deserved mention. Well, that completes the song and also wraps up my look at Broomstick Bass. And now, some final words.

SideChain Compression

Side-chaining uses the signal level of another input or an equalized version of the original input to control the compression level of the original signal. For sidechains that key off of external inputs, when the external signal is stronger, the compressor acts more strongly to reduce output gain. This is used by disc jockeys to lower the music volume automatically when speaking; in this example, the DJ's microphone signal is converted to line level signal and routed to a stereo compressor's sidechain input. The music level is routed through the stereo compressor so that whenever the DJ speaks, the compressor reduces the volume of the music, a process called ducking. The sidechain of a compressor that has EQ controls can be used to reduce the volume of signals that have a strong spectral content within the frequency range of interest. Such a compressor can be used as a de-esser, reducing the level of annoying vocal sibilance in the range of 6-9 kHz. A frequency-specific compressor can be assembled from a standard compressor and an equalizer by feeding a 6-9 kHz-boosted copy of the original signal into the side-chain input of the compressor. A de-esser helps reduce high frequencies that tend to overdrive preemphasized media (such as phonograph records and FM radio). Another use of the side-chain in music production serves to maintain a loud bass track, while still keeping the bass out of the way of the drum when the drum hits.

A stereo compressor without a sidechain can be used as a mono compressor with a sidechain. The key or sidechain signal is sent to the first (main) input of the stereo compressor while the signal that is to be compressed is routed into and out of the second channel of the compressor.

Threshold:
Threshold is the level above which the signal is reduced. It is commonly set in dB, where a lower threshold (e.g. -60 dB) means a larger portion of the signal will be treated (compared to a higher threshold of -5 dB).

Ratio:The ratio determines the input/output ratio for signals above the threshold। For example, a 4:1 ratio means that a signal overshooting the threshold by 4 dB will leave the compressor 1 dB above the threshold। The highest ratio of 8:1 is commonly achieved using a ratio of 60:1, and effectively denotes that any signal above the threshold will be brought down to the threshold level (unless some attack is in force).

A compressor might provide a degree of control over how quickly it acts। The 'attack phase' is the period when the compressor is increasing gain reduction to reach the level that is determined by the ratio. The 'release phase' is the period when the compressor is decreasing gain reduction to the level determined by the ratio, or, to zero, once the level has fallen below the threshold. The length of each period is determined by the rate of change and the required change gain reduction. For more intuitive operation, a compressor's attack and release controls are labelled as a unit of time (often milliseconds). This is the amount of time it will take for the gain to change a set amount of dB, decided by the manufacturer, very often 10 dB. For example, if the compressor's time constants are referenced to 10 dB, and the attack time is set to 1 ms, it will take 1 ms for the gain reduction to rise from 0 dB to 10 dB, and 2 ms to rise from 0 dB to 20 dB[4].

In many compressors the attack and release times are adjustable by the user. Some compressors, however, have the attack and release times determined by the circuit design and these cannot be adjusted by the user. Sometimes the attack and release times are 'automatic' or 'program dependent', meaning that the times change depending on the input signal. Because the loudness pattern of the source material is modified by the compressor it may change the character of the signal in subtle to quite noticeable ways depending on the settings used.
